Performance Art – CBS television Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and Greater Hartford College – collaborative. Menthe Wells

The Multimedia Juried Gallery includes the Wadsworth Atheneum’s television performances of Timbulakatana featuring Esmerelda, Boom..boom..boomalaka and the Wiggled Ear Rabbit performed by Menthe Wells and a cast from Greater Hartford College in Performance Art.

PERFORMANCE ART

Timbulakatana was created by Menthe Wells (Dr Carol Wells) for the Wadsworth Atheneum CBS television presentations which included Greater Hartford College’s Art Students experiencing the Art is Life aspect of learning Performance Art. This embraced artists being part of a real Art Movement in collaboration with the leading American museum under the direction of Menthe. The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art played the Performance Art Timbulakatana many times in programs in the period.

The Performance Art Movement, as paid Art, emerged after the Events Movement which was historically subsequent to the Happenings of the 1960s. Performance Art was the core of the museum work on the television network. Menthe originated, directed and performed in episodes of Timbulakatana and other “plays” which included Toys Grow on Trees, Sir Ponchartrain, Boom Boom Boomalaca and Omnibus the Sea Animal and others involving Esmeralda the Witch and various other witch sisters including Palasha and Cleopatra the siren serpent of the Nile. Performance Art, under Menthe’s leadership in the field within the Atheneum spread to Connecticut Gallery locations such as the The Farmington Valley Art Center, Elsworth Gallery, Universities in Connecticut and Menthe traveled with the large animated sculptures for Performance Art. Roundabout Theatre in New York City, the endeavor in the arts developed by Gene Feist, had Menthe perform on Stage II in this period. The Harford Curant Sunday Edition (in the period) wrote up Menthe giving her a full page published spread which reported museum events using her Animated Sculpture and her work as a “soft sculpurist extraordinaire” and amusingly added a perception of Performance Art in the Life/Style article descriptively, saying she “danced, sang, and cavorted on stage”….this was the Performance Art of the period. The public funds were provided by a school district and the developmental process of the work took place as a year long endeavor. The final Projection in early form of a sight-sound intermedia was shown in the Museum, in the Lions Gallery of the Senses, in various galleries and widely shown in the educational community including in Colleges and Universities and other museum environs.

European Minister of Culture and Social Contributions Wordwide

Tomasz Gerlach Ministery of Culture Example of work in Laos reflecting Humor.
A European Minister of Culture working with countries such as India, Thailand and Poland spent considerable time integrating cultures thematically using humor as the basis particularly in Laos. The examle of one of the collections is below. Tomasz Gerlach, a Polish Government Offical working within the Ministery of Culture has compiled collections of work as an individual supporting cultural endeavors through connections of various cultures in various countries. His work in the compilation below in Laos with emphasis here on exhibit in a family centered museum was reviewed by a Laos born Mung tribe member critic who verified this collection and the humor to be appropriate for family viewing in the museum’s library.

Gerlach’s work bringing the integration of cultures is known well in Thailand, Poland, Laos and India. Notable also is his work in Poland integrating painting, sculpture and large museum type exhibitions from America into the working field of visual art in various municipalities. Very modestly, he ministers culture and clearly states he is not personally an artist. His work is significantly recognized in this museum.

Tomasz Gerlach has developed work in India, Laos and Thailand and included some of the historical documentation of his work in India here as the record.

Frances Follin’s Cassone is an outstanding written record of Art worldwide.
